Different Wideband Direction of Arrival(DOA) Estimation methods: An Overview

This paper presents an overview of different types of wideband direction of Arrival (DOA) estimation methods. Direction-finding algorithms have straight forward applications in Sonar and Radar, and are also useful in advanced satellite and cellular communication systems for adaptive beamforming of smart antennas. Coherent Signal Subspace Processing (CSSM), one of the earliest wideband DOA estimation method constructs a single signal subspace for high resolution estimation of angles of arrival of multiple-wideband plane waves. The second approach called the Weighted Average of Signal Subspaces (WAVES) combines a robust near-optimal data-adaptive statistic. This method is used with an enhanced design of focusing matrices to ensure a statistically robust preprocessing of wideband data. Test of Orthogonality of Projected Subspaces (TOPS), the most recent wideband DOA estimation method estimates DOAs by measuring the orthogonal relation between the signal and noise subspaces of multiple frequency components of the sources. The TOPS method performs better than others in mid signal–to-noise ratio (SNR) ranges, while CSSM and WAVES work better in low SNR. Incoherent methods like IMUSIC works best at high SNR.
